Can Coffee Stain Wood?

March 25, 2014

Description:

I’ve seen a lot of people claiming coffee can stain wood, but I had a feeling this wasn’t as handy as others make it seem. So this week I’m putting it to the test. I began by brewing up a pot of coffee. I let it cool to room temperature and then began applying it to a scrap piece of oak. When initially applied, I was surprised at how well it worked, but after it began to dry, the color was basically gone and it left my board with the grain slightly raised. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend coffee to stain wood, but it is possible that you could get a darker color if you brewed up a stronger pot and applied more layers. This would most likely continue to raise the grain however and at that point you’d just be better off buying stain. So in conclusion, I would not recommend coffee to stain wood.
