How to Make a Hat Rack

If you’re anything like me, then you can never find a hat when you need one. This week I set out to solve this problem once and for all. I decided to make a hat rack that didn’t take up too much space, but was capable of holding a lot of hats. After looking online for some ideas, I came to this design. It doesn’t take up a lot of space, but it also has a clean design to it. Using Adobe Illustrator, I designed the side profile for the hats to hang on and printed out a cutting template. For this project, I used about 9′ of 1×4 oak. I started by cutting 2 pieces to 10.5″ and 2 more at 37″ long. I used my templates to cut out the side profiles and sanded all of my boards smooth. Using dowel joinery, I glued up the sides to the top and bottom connectors. Once the glue was fully cured, I sanded off any extra glue that squeezed out and stained the Oak a nice dark color. When it comes to hanging it on the wall, I’d recommend using T-slotted router bit to make a slot for a nail to go. This will allow you to mount the hat rack flush against the wall. If you’re like me and didn’t feel like doing that though, you can use a sawtooth picture frame hanger. Either one will work, but the router bit is the better way to go in the end.
