How to Make a Strong Workbench (Old Version)

August 13, 2013

Description:

Note: This is the older version of my workbench build. Since then, I have created a new video on how to make a workbench that is higher quality.

This week I received a 2′ wide by 10′ section of counter top for free, so I decided it would be the perfect top for a new workbench. I started this project out by cutting all my 2×4’s down to their final dimensions. I used wood glue and screws to assemble the frame. This will give me a solid base for the counter top to go. Once the frame is assembled, all you have to do is add the top piece. You can either use a similar counter top or 3/4″ plywood for the top of the bench and I would also recommend buying an additional sheet of plywood to add shelves to the bottom (I didn’t have enough money, otherwise I would’ve). Below I left a shopping/cut list to help you create the same workbench for your shop.

Shopping List:

5- 2×4’s at 8′ Long

4- 2×4’s at 10′ Long (Front and Back Rails)

1- 2’x10′ Counter Top (or add an additional sheet of 3/4″ thick 4’x8′ plywood)

1- 4’x8′ Sheet of 3/4″ Plywood (Bottom Shelves)

1- Box of 2.5″ Wood Screws

1- Box of 1 5/8″ Wood Screws (to hold the top down)

1- Bottle of Wood Glue (Titebond II)

Cut List:

6- 2×4’s at 3′ Long (Legs)

4- 2×4’s at 10′ Long (Front and Back Rails)

8- 2×4’s at 21″ Long (Side Rails)

4- 2’x5′ Sheets of Plywood (2 are for the top and 2 are for the bottom shelves. Don’t forget to notch out the corners for the bottom shelves)
