How to Make an End Grain Cutting Board Part 2 of 2
March 21, 2014
Description:
This week I’m going to finish the cutting board I began building last week. I started by un-clamping the second glue up and sanded it nice and smooth. I would recommend buying a good sander before making a project like this, otherwise you’ll be sanding for days! Now don’t get me wrong, sanding a cutting board with a good sander still takes a long time, but it will help shorten the process. Keep in mind that end grain takes a longer time to sand compared to face grain, so you’ll need a lot of patience. After all the sanding was done, I rounded over the top of the board over at my router table. When it comes to applying a finish, you have a few options to choose from. I went with Howard’s Cutting Board Oil and it really helped pull the grain out. Another option is to use vegetable oil, but you’ll end up having to re-apply the finish more often. No matter what you choose, be sure it’s a food-safe finish!
